Since October 15, 2016 Azerbaijan National Automobile Club (AMAK), in cooperation with Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport (EASST), FIA Foundation, the British Embassy in Baku, Ministry of Education and State Traffic Police Department of the Republic of Azerbaijan, is implementing EASST Road Safety Education pack, at 5 public schools and 5 private kindergartens. The education process is implemented on weekly basis among children of the age of 4–14 in both Azerbaijani and Russian sectors.
As part of this education process, AMAK involved Baku State Road Police and as from November 28 Road Police representatives have been delivering one course per each class in both Azerbaijani and Russian sectors of the pilot schools. During these courses, Road Police representatives hold discussions with children, asking various road safety related questions to evaluate their level of knowledge and awareness, as well as share valuable recommendations that children can apply on daily basis while going to school and back. Road Police representatives also hold discussions around special EASST posters and bookmarks with key messages on road safety that were prepared for them and distributed to each class.
Children showed unexpected enthusiasm and interest to these discussions and surprised both Road Police representatives and their own teachers with their questions and requests for recommendations, specifically related to tips on how to educate/advice their own driving parents on wearing seat-belts, speeding, talking on the phone while driving, etc.
It is worth mentioning that involving Road Police t in road safety education process at schools is unique, since Road Police has been cooperating with schools mainly as jury on certain competitions without direct participation in the education process.
